The 2021 Kushite-Nubian Heritage International Conference: Preserving An African Legacy virtual event will feature scholarly presenters and cultural performers from the following nations:
United States
Canada
Sudan
South Sudan
Egypt
Ethiopia
Japan
The conference will present a perspective of ancient Kush and ancient Nubia as important Nile Valley civilizations, with the two heartlands centered in Sudan and originating from the south in the upper Nile Basin region. The conference will highlight both ancient and contemporary Kushite and Nubian cultural aspects and historical contributions to humanity.
The international conference advances the KNC view highlighting work of Druscilla Dunjee Houston and pioneering field research of Dr. Chancellor Williams in the 1950s, as he argued the antiquity of ancient Kush as the older of the civilizations, followed by Nubia, ancient Egypt as indigenous African civilizations.
Our perspective differs from many mainstream Nubiologists and Egyptologists, who focus on the Sudan region only in later times (for example, the Kerma period or the “25th Dynasty” in the 8th century BCE), and claim that the civilizations in Sudan began much later than Egypt and simply “imitated” many ancient Egyptian practices.
The South Sudan region is typically ignored in mainstream scholarship on ancient Africa, and our conference is focused on changing this omission and highlighting the significance of the South Sudan region in the origins of ancient Kush.
